I am a sociologist who researches racial and gender inequality in professional occupations. I’m currently the Mary Tileston Hemenway Professor of Arts and Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, where I also co-direct the Office of Public Scholarship. I have served as President of the American Sociological Association (2025), the Southern Sociological Society (2021), and Sociologists for Women in Society (2017). I am also an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and write regularly for mainstream outlets including The Atlantic, Forbes, Slate, and Harvard Business Review.
